Room For Improvement

Room For Improvement: Franklin living room

Newlyweds Michelle and Kevin like their living room.

Michelle McErlean, homeowner
"It's actually very functional as it is right now."

But they don't love it.

Michelle McErlean, homeowner
"It's kind of a mismatch of all of our furniture from when we were single. It's just not cozy right now."

So designer Emily Innes is here to help them merge their tastes...

Emily Innes, Emily Innes Interiors
"We had to find a way of mixing both Kevin's style and Michelle's style."

...to create a cozy and comfortable space.

First a warmer color is picked for the walls and the beautiful front window gets a color of its own.

Emily Innes, Emily Innes Interiors
"I wanted something that was eye catching. I wanted something that made a feature of this beautiful window."

J.G. Painting uses a special type of paint for a nicer look.

Juan Gomez, J.G. Painting
"Oil base paint actually gives you a better finish and it will last longer."

To blend the couple's modern and traditional tastes, furniture that incorporates both styles is selected.

Emily Innes, Emily Innes Interiors
"Michelle's a little bit more traditional, Kevin's a little bit more modern. So we have traditional furniture with the feet, but we had a modern fabric with the leather."

Bloom and Company have a clever idea for an inexpensive alternative to a movie screen for Kevin's video projector: a pull down window shade.

Matthew Bloom, Bloom and Company Inc.
"This was a simple way to make a functional product that was still cost effective, get you your overall result, without blocking the use of the wall for anything else."

To keep the room feeling cozy, they also hang some colorful window treatments.

Using wallpaper as artwork is a cheaper way to add some nice character to a room.

Emily Innes, Emily Innes Interiors
"It's something that when they get tired of it, it's easy to replace."

And our designer says florals are a great way to help your home change with the seasons.

It looks like this living room is ready to welcome a happy couple.

Michelle McErlean, homeowner
"Oh wow. I love it."

Kevin McErlean, homeowner
"It's real nice."

Michelle McErlean, homeowner
"I love it. It's beautiful."

This redo cost the couple just under $5000. They say they are so happy they can now live in their living room.
